Flat Earth Theory Explained: Why Some People Believe It

Flat Earth Theory Explained: Why Some People Believe It

For more than 2,000 years, humans have known that the Earth is round. Ancient Greek scholars like Eratosthenes even calculated the planet’s circumference with impressive accuracy using nothing more than shadows and geometry.

Yet in the 21st century, a surprising number of people still believe the Earth is flat.

So where does this idea come from — and why does it keep resurfacing?

What Flat Earth Believers Claim

Flat Earth conspiracy theorists argue that the Earth is not a sphere but a flat disc surrounded by a massive ice wall (which they claim is Antarctica).

According to the conspiracy:

  • Space agencies like NASA fake satellite images.
  • Gravity is either misunderstood or completely fake.
  • Space travel and satellite launches are staged.
  • The horizon always appears flat, which they claim proves the Earth cannot be curved.

In this narrative, governments, scientists, pilots, and astronauts are all supposedly part of a massive global cover-up designed to hide the “true shape” of Earth.

Why the Theory Spreads Online

Modern Flat Earth movements exploded on social media.

Videos, memes, and discussion forums allow conspiracy communities to reinforce their beliefs and share selective “evidence” that seems convincing at first glance.

Psychologists call this confirmation bias — the tendency to seek information that supports what we already believe.

Once someone enters these communities, it becomes easy to dismiss real scientific evidence as part of the supposed conspiracy.

How Science Actually Proves the Earth Is Round

The spherical Earth isn’t based on a single piece of evidence.

It’s supported by centuries of observations and experiments.

Some of the most obvious examples include:

1️⃣ Ships disappearing over the horizon

When a ship sails away, the bottom disappears first, followed by the mast.

If Earth were flat, the entire ship would simply get smaller.

2️⃣ Different stars in different hemispheres

People in the Northern Hemisphere see different constellations than those in the Southern Hemisphere.

This only makes sense on a curved planet.

3️⃣ Time zones

If Earth were flat, sunrise would happen everywhere at the same time.

Instead, our rotating globe creates the time zones we experience every day.

4️⃣ Satellite images and space missions

Thousands of satellites orbit Earth today, providing GPS, communications, and weather forecasting.

These systems rely on orbital physics that only works with a spherical planet.

The Simplest Argument

If the Earth were flat, it would require millions of scientists, engineers, astronauts, pilots, and governments across the entire world to maintain a perfect secret for centuries.

That would be one of the most complicated conspiracies in human history.

It would actually be easier to simply tell the truth.

A Friendly Way to Debate Flat Earthers

Arguing aggressively rarely works.

Instead, try asking simple questions like:

  • “How do time zones work on a flat Earth?”
  • “Why do airplanes follow curved routes?”
  • “Why do satellites orbit the planet?”

Curiosity often works better than confrontation.

A Little Fun From Molinex

At Molinex Imaginarium, we love science, curiosity, and a little humor.

So we created a shirt that says:

“Not Flat. We Checked.”

Because sometimes the best way to answer a conspiracy theory…

is with a little scientific sarcasm.

And if you happen to know a Flat Earther…

wearing it might drive them just a little bit crazy. 😄
