5. Honesty and Sincerity (Makoto)
A samurai’s word was considered binding.
Promises were taken seriously, and deception was viewed as dishonorable.

6. Honor (Meiyo)
Honor was perhaps the most important principle of all.
A samurai’s reputation reflected their entire life. Losing honor could bring immense shame, sometimes leading warriors to perform ritual suicide known as seppuku.
Maintaining honor meant living with dignity, loyalty, and integrity.
7. Loyalty (Chugi)
Samurai were expected to demonstrate unwavering loyalty to their lord, family, and cause.
This loyalty formed the backbone of the feudal Japanese social structure and reinforced the samurai's role as both warriors and servants of their rulers.
